North Lanark Highland Games
Come out and enjoy all things Scottish: bagpipers, pipe bands, highland dancers, heavy events (eg. caber toss), children's games, merch, massed bands, a beer tent, and more! The individual competitions start at 8:30am and are more geared towards competing than spectators, but get a good spot in the bleachers for 1pm for the opening ceremonies, & heavyweight athletics, plus pipe & dance competitions usually at other locations on the fairgrounds. 5:30pm experience the massed bands, where all the pipe bands march side by side playing the same tunes -- quite an experience. Tickets at EventBrite.

Exhibition: Jihane Mossalim
Aug 3-Sep 16. In these new paintings by Montreal-based artist Jihane Mossalim, the artist explores past, present, and future, and the illusion of time. The paintings are inspired by old family pictures and strangers' discarded photographs. The resulting paintings appear foreign and familiar at the same time, evoking an eerie intimacy. In this exhibition, the artist has also added an element of "augmented reality" which will be accessible via an app on a smartphone! Meet the artist Aug 20.

Traveling throughout Alberta, and contending with all the challenges of painting outdoors, her works capture direct light, reflected light, and diffuse overcast light.

Exhibition: Karen Haines' en plein air
Jul 27 to Sep 2. This exhibition features 20 new paintings, all on small panels, completed en plein air by Edmonton-based artist Karen Haines. Drawn to the looser energy of painting outdoors, Karen Haines uses small wood panels and a limited colour palette to quickly sketch the patterns of light and dark. Traveling throughout Alberta, and contending with all the challenges of painting outdoors, her works capture direct light, reflected light, and diffuse overcast light. Join us for the Virtual Vernissage/Artist Talk on Zoom on Aug 10, 7pm-8pm;  email info@sivarulrasa.com to register for this Zoom event.

Almonte Song Circle Collective
Almonte Song Circle Collective
A group of Ottawa Valley musicians meet Thursday evenings for a weekly acoustic session. From 6-7pm they try out new songs for & with each other, then 7-8pm they'll play familiar cover tunes & invite people to sing along. New musicians welcome! “What we ask of new musicians is that you be able to get through a single song or songs from start to finish in a musical way. Playing just one song in an evening is perfectly OK, but if you can’t sing on key, can’t keep your instrument tuned, or riff all over someone else’s song to the point of distraction, we sort that out." - Nathan Rudyk.
