Exhibition: Transience, by Sue Adams
A solo exhibition of new sculpture & works on paper by Sue Adams. In this new body of work, Adams is inspired by the phases of life, as it goes through its cycles of growth, harvest, death and renewal. “The only constant is change and letting go before moving on”, she notes. “There is a transience or fleeting quality to each stage as well as an underlying beauty which carries with it the sadness of decline.” The four works on paper echo the theme of cycles: the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, the Second World War, and the present Covid-19 pandemic are all fodder for the artist’s creative impulses.

Her gaze is often drawn to micro-environments with attention to negative spaces and the intricate interplay of colour and texture, turning rocks or pieces of tree bark into an immersive experience for her viewers.

Take Back the Night Rally/March
Lanark County Interval House
For the past 14 years, Carleton Place has been host to a meaningful Take Back the Night march joining hundreds of thousands of supporters Canada-wide. We march together in solidarity to demand that a woman’s right to walk our streets safely be upheld. We remember and honor the women and children who have been taken at the hands of violence and those who live with violence everyday. This year’s gathering begins at 6pm in the park behind Carleton Place town hall, with the rally and march set to begin at 7pm. The march will follow the traditional route through town on Bridge Street, and loop back to the park. ~ALL ARE WELCOME~ All participants asked to please wear a mask and be mindful of social distancing.

Love From Afar
A Company of Fools
The new Love from Afar public tour examines what it means to experience love across boundaries. The tour breaks new ground for the Fools, with elements that they plan to continue into future summer Torchlight presentations. The 2021 tour is deliberately constrained to ensure adherence to safety restrictions, taking care to protect audience members and the Fools team. Unlike Fools’ summer shows, this will be a ticketed event with a strict audience limit. The pay-what-you-can policy stays, but this will be via an online ticketing platform or via phone. Cash or credit cards will not be accepted at the site. Tickets: Eventbrite.ca.

Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters
Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School (1891-1981) Commemoration Project and Reunion events that took place in Williams Lake, BC, in May 2013. The events were designed to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. Chief Justice Murray Sinclair challenged all of the participants to keep the reconciliation process alive, as a result of the realization that every former student had similar stories. As spokesperson for the Reunion group leading up to the events, former student Phyllis (Jack) Webstad told her story of her first day at residential school when her shiny new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, was taken from her as a 6-year-old girl.
The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30 opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. Every Child Matters, even if they are an adult, from now on.
The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. See orangeshirtday.org for more info.
