Some of us are beyond the youthful exuberance demonstrated at local gyms with equipment resembling a torture chamber and sweating young people in spandex pedalling stationary bikes to the nowhere land of vigour and fitness. Older and wiser, we know there is an easier path to keeping ourselves healthy, one that involves a good workout without the need for fancy pants and Gatorade.
Imagine entrusting your body to a fully-trained fitness instructor whose credentials are tailored to special senior needs, enjoying familiar fun music, and maybe even staying for lunch after the exercise session, all at a price that will leave change in your pocket.
The Mills Corporation, that wonderful all-things-to-all-people organization, has created a series of exercise programs to fit busy time schedules and specific needs. Three times a week, from September 16 through June, participants are invited to increase their Strength and Balance. The exercise regime is only as rigorous as you want it to be, from basic cardio to light weights and stretching exercises. The most fun is cardio/brain work, when the instructor will challenge everyone to move feet, arms, and body, all at one time. A full hour of music, laughter, and movement leaves everyone energized and wanting more. All you need to bring is enthusiasm. The Mills supplies the rest! These classes take place on Mondays from 1–2pm at 375 Country Street, Almonte (the Stan Mills Lounge); Wednesdays from 2–3pm at the Almonte Civitan Hall (Wolf Grove Road); and Thursdays from 1–2pm at the Carembeck Community Centre (CP).
If you’re not into marching and gum chewing, you will enjoy Fit as a Fiddle. What could be easier than sitting to do your exercises? It’s still a challenge and a good workout, just not so hard on the knees. After an hour, you can then pull up that chair and enjoy a light lunch. Social time along with exercises: that’s a programme everyone can handle! This class is on Fridays from 10:30–11:30am at 375 Country Street (Stan Mills Lounge), with lunch ($5) to follow if desired.
A 12-week Falls Prevention class offers participants an exercise and information session with material to take away. This is of particular interest to people with mobility problems who need help to remain in their homes. Check with the Mills for schedule.
About that change in your pocket: these programs are pay-as-you-go, $5 per session, payable when you arrive. You do need to register with the Mills and sign the usual waiver form, so call 256–4700, or simply show up at any location. We’ll be glad to see you; you’ll be glad you came!

Anyone who’s ever heard a farmer’s daughter joke knows that the cultural differences between the country and the city are fertile ground for humour. When rural rubs up against urban, friendly gibes seem to sprout like snap peas in springtime.
That’s where the play Ed’s Garage begins. But at its heart, this smart, good-natured comedy about rural life is as thought-provoking as it is laughter-inducing.

The nights are getting shorter, the leaves will start to change soon, and that can mean only one thing: it’s time for the annual murder mystery at The Station Theatre! This year’s show is Death by Design by Rob Urbinati. It’s part murder mystery, part farce, part love story, and all entertaining! Samuel French asks and answers the question: “What happens when you mix the brilliant wit of Noël Coward with the intricate plotting of Agatha Christie? Set during a weekend in an English country mano......

Quick: what do these five downtown Almonte buildings all have in common: the Victoria Mill, the Thoburn Mill, the Old Post Office, 65 Mill Street and 78 Mill Street?
If you knew that they were all buildings that have been renovated over the last 26 years by the Almonte Heritage Redevelopment Group, allow yourself a smug smile. What you might also know, if you have been reading the Millstone recently, is that these five buildings have been shortlisted for a national heritage award.......
