2019 Heritage Perth Christmas House Tour
Fourteen Years of Holiday Cheer & Fundraising for Education and Literacy - theHumm November 2019

By — Mary Rothfels

We all have favourite traditions to lighten our hearts as the daylight hours shorten and the temperatures fall. The annual Heritage Perth Christmas House Tour is one such joyful occasion to break up the winter months. For 2019, the Perth and District Chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has once again lined up an incredible selection of eight homes, transformed for the holidays with inspiring festive décor presented by talented local designers and florists. The popularity of this tour has continued through the years, attracting those interested in local history, home construction, heritage conservation, restoration, remodeling and seasonal decorating.

An exciting aspect of the 2019 house tour is the close proximity of all eight houses. It is not always possible to minimize driving, but this year you’ll be especially pleased with the route and the variety of homes, including traditional stone farmhouse, elegant Victorian, country bungalow, modern green design and former carriage house. The delightful heritage town of Perth is a destination in itself, with streetscapes crafted by Scottish masons in the early 1800s now housing pubs and restaurants, breweries, galleries and artisan shops, bed and breakfast establishments and a variety of other attractions.

Not only is the house tour great fun, it is a significant fundraiser that supports local women in their pursuit of advanced education and contributes to literacy and other educational initiatives in local schools and libraries. Since the tours began fourteen years ago, over $225,000 in proceeds have been distributed throughout the Lanark County area.

It literally takes a village — or rather, a town district — to pull off an event of this magnitude. The homeowners who open their doors to 800 or more visitors over the course of two days make the greatest contribution by entrusting their properties to us. Local businesses invest as advertisers, sponsors, decorators and florists, and provide gift certificates that are raffled off to augment the profits. Talented musicians donate their time to entertain visitors while they tour the homes. The Perth BIA and Chamber of Commerce actively integrate the event into other Christmastime festivities and promotions. When it comes to the actual tour weekend, so many volunteers are needed in the eight homes that CFUW members prevail upon friends and family from all around to lend a hand. Finally, we couldn’t hold this annual house tour without the avid participation of our ticket-holders! Thank you one and all for your support.

House Tour tickets are $30 each again this year. They may be purchased online from Tickets Please ticketsplease.ca or in person from a number of locations listed at cfuwperthanddistrict.wordpress.com/2019-house-tour/ and in the ad on page 19 of this issue. If these options are not available to you, please call CFUW member Isabel at 326–0437 or email cfuw.perth@gmail.com .

David Ivens —He’s Got a Hammer - theHumm November 2019

By Sally Hansen

Art… and Soul

That’s not correct. He has many, many specialized hammers and other metalworking tools, and he hammers in the morning and in the evening and in the afternoons. And he’s been happily doing it for over forty years. You know you’ve found your niche when what you want to do after you retire is to do more of what you’ve been working at.

David Ivens ran a restoration and fabrication company in Toronto for forty years, creating, reproducing and......

On Tuesday, September 7, 1982, Peter Hamer walked into Bell High School for the first time. He was a shy kid taking the first steps into his new school eager to begin grade 9. The next four years at Bell would prove to be anything but that.

Not much of a jock, or a high achiever scholastically, Peter found his place in the music room. Par......

Who Stole Christmasfrom Mississippi Mills? Who? Who? - theHumm November 2019

By — Heather Phaneuf

Disgruntled are you? Could it be the pre-winter blues? The looming holly-daze? Or are you fundamentally concerned about the suspicious red boxes that traipsed willy-nilly through last month’s Humm? Hmmm? You should be!

Something is amiss in Mississippi Mills. Something is horribly wrong. Someone is ranting about Almonte, Pakenham, Ramsay and why the heck isn’t it called Alpakram? Almapakarama? Ramalamapakahama-ding-dong? Why wouldn’t you be concerned?

Solve the mystery! Grab a ticket to......

Wherein the hero is identified, a disease is defeated and medicinal food is defined. All this in a thousand words and one picture! (For those coming in late, see my column in the October 2019 issue). Our story resumes with the reminder that celiac disease is a real disorder, not a preference or a sensitivity. It can be difficult to diagnose but even a small amount of (wheat) gluten can be the source of much and long-lasting misery.

Wheat and wheat processing played a ......
