Music To Our Ears

Summer in Winter at St James in Carleton Place

This just in (it missed the deadline for our January issue): on Monday, January 9 at 7pm, acclaimed international soprano Monica Ling Lin will bring Neapolitan Songs from the sunny south of Italy plus selected operatic arias and sacred music such as Ave Maria (Gounod), Gesu Bambino (Yon), The Lord’s Prayer (Malotte), and The Holy City to warm hearts and feed spirits. Come enjoy the music at this free entrance (voluntary donation) concert.

Here’s what concert organizers have to say about Monica:
Monica has returned to Canada from Europe for Christmas and after giving concerts near Seattle and Vancouver has kindly agreed to sing at Carleton Place before flying back to France (local music lovers will remember her from Fauré’s Requiem at Carleton Place three years ago). In Italy she has sung numerous Verdi and Puccini arias, and Neapolitan Songs “à la napoletano.” In France, Monica was the soloist at the funeral mass of Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Acclaimed at a variety of French concerts, it is no surprise that after one performance Monica was presented with the Keys to the City. In Toronto, she was soloist at the Gala Concert for Pope John Paul II, and also at the worldwide broadcast of the papal vigil. Educated in England, Monica became a pianist through the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College of Music (L.T.C.L.), then in Toronto trained as a soprano (A.R.C.T. performance) and gained the Silver Prize. She recorded a series as soprano soloist for the Polish Radio Corporation at several major Cathedrals, spellbound the audience as soloist for three nights at La Madeleine in Paris and has sung many operatic parts in several languages in the USA, Canada and Europe. Monica has trained with some of the best operatic teachers in the world and now passes on the knowledge by giving performance lessons in the south of France. In her spare time she took an Honours Degree in Pure Mathematics, “out of interest.” For some years Monica was deputy organist at an Ontario Roman Catholic Cathedral where she also regularly gave concerts in several languages and directed the choir.
Monica will be accompanied by Ralph Langtry, B.A. A.R.C.T., now in his fortieth year as St James’ Director of Music.
